Le travail c'est difficile

cabaretical conference

What is work ? Does it only exist when it pays ? Are we only working when we create wealth ? But then, when we create wealth, are we always paid for the work we’re doing ?
At the heart of our western society, the concept of work has been perpetuating social divide for centuries. Those sometimes led to popular uprisings that changed the course of history.

Inspired by various readings (Emma, Émile Zola, André Gorz, le Comité invisible, Camille Teste, Christophe Dejours, Paul Lafargue, Franck Lepage…), this performance questions the conditions and organisation of contemporary labor. It explores the diversity of our relationship to this fondamental social structure that is work : how can we define work ? Who benefits from it ? Who suffers from it ?

On stage, a cabaretical conference where popular french songs about work are interwined to more experimental musics. You will also hear interviews of workers and work specialists as well as literature quotations. This production is led by one ambition : to bring together performing arts and social sciences.
